A Journey Through the Frederik Hendrik Museum

Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about Mauritius' colonial roots, Frederik Hendrik Museum promises an unforgettable voyage through time.

The museum is located in Old Grand Port (South East of Mauritius) and was named after a Dutch stadtholder. To date, it is a testament to the island's colonial past, showcasing artefacts, ruins, and 17th-century paintings and maps.

A Journey Through Time

During your visit, you’ll trace the island's earliest human settlements back to the 16th century as you explore the Vieux Grand Port Historic Site.

Discover the remnants of the Dutch fort constructed by Governor Simonsz Gooyer and unravel the tales of exploration, conquest, and conflict that have shaped Mauritius' identity.

Exploring the Exhibits - What to Expect?

Reopened in 1999, the Frederik Hendrik Museum continues to captivate visitors with its ever-evolving collection.

From Dutch discoveries to French governance, each exhibit offers a unique perspective on the island's rich heritage.

The panels depict the activities of the Dutch in Mauritius and Indian Ocean, 17th century maps, and pictures of Maurits Van Nassau and Frederik Hendrik (stadholders of the Netherlands).
