About the Marie Reine de la Paix

Atop the slopes of the Signal Mountain in Port-Louis stands Marie Reine de la Paix (or Mary Queen of Peace), a symbol of faith for Mauritius’ Catholic community.

Throughout the year, devout pilgrims flock to Marie Reine de la Paix, especially during special religious celebrations like the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Noteworthy visits from Pope John Paul II in 1989 and Pope Francis in 2019 have added to the church’s significance.

Ascending its summit, visitors are rewarded with not only a spiritual sanctuary but also panoramic views of Port-Louis. The modern chapel and its serene gardens offer a tranquil setting for prayer and contemplation, attracting both locals and tourists seeking admiration of its architectural marvel.

Fun Fact: The monument of the Virgin Mary displays her holding a world globe.

History of the Chapel and Shrine of Marie Reine de la Paix

This Catholic church features a magnificent 3-metre monument of the Virgin Mary, sculpted from pristine Carrara marble. Monseigneur James Leen, the 8th bishop of Port Louis, had the monument built in 1940 to place Mauritians under the protection of the Virgin Mary during the Second World War.
