About The Kwan Tee Pagoda
Let’s take some time to re focus on spirituality and peace of mind. A visit to the Kwan Tee Pagoda will surely help you to achieve this.
Built around 179 years ago, the Kwan Tee Pagoda is the oldest Pagoda in the Southern Hemisphere and in the African continent. It has also been recently listed as a National Heritage by the National Heritage Fund of Mauritius. Located at Les Salines, the Pagoda faces the sea and is set against the mountains. The construction and location of the Pagoda itself abides by the principles of spirituality.
Other than being a peaceful place with its majestic piece of land, the Pagoda also has beautiful gardens full of coconut trees in the front yard and a few seasonal fruits trees in the back and it makes for a perfect place for meditation.
The cult of Kwan Tee is associated with the God of wealth. Kwan Tee or Guan Di is also known as the God of war and righteousness and the benefactor. You will also find smaller altars inside the Pagoda for Ma Chou, protectors of sailors and Kwan Yin, giver of children. To represent happiness, prosperity and purity in the Pagoda, the colours red, green and yellow are predominant.
A visit to the Kwan Tee Pagoda will surely calm you and appease your mind. The Kwan Tee Pagoda is definitely a haven of peace and tranquility despite being located in Port Louis, one of the busiest places in Mauritius You can combine this visit with a visit to Port Louis.
- It is a place of prayer for the Chinese Community so appropriate attire is a must and no loud talking/noises.
