Mauritius, while famous for its turquoise water and sandy beaches is also quite famous for the unity that reigns among the religions of the locals. So let’s take a trip to the North of the island to discover one of the most important Hindu temples in Mauritius.
Founded in 1888 by the priest Pandit Sanjbunlall Ramsoondur, the Maheswarnath Temple is the abode of Lord Shiva and is considered as one of the biggest and oldest temples across the island.
The Temple is also famous for being associated with the first pilgrimage to Grand Bassin, the sacred lake in the centre Mauritius. According to some local legend, a pot of gold and silver belonging to Indian pirates were buried on site and provided the means to build the temple.
Painted in white, the shrine features colourful sculptures and floral designs which are in stark contrast to the white background. The architecture of the temple itself is inspired from the Bengal style with the building shaped like a five flowered temple which is devoted to the Lord Shiva. Inside the main Temple, you will also find a Shivalinga, idols of Goddess Parvati (wife of Lord Shiva), Ganesh and Kartikeya (sons of Lord Shiva) and the sacred cow, Nandi (transportation of Lord Shiva) at the entrance. There are also several other small temples within the complex dedicated for gods like Natraja, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Hanuman and Lord Narayan.
For those seeking peace and tranquility, or learn more on the local Hindu culture, a visit to this famous Temple is a must.
Many visitors claim to feel a calming sensation after a visit and it may be due to the various gods for those who have faith or simply because of the colourful architecture for others.
