Mare aux Vacoas - Mauritius’ Largest Reservoir in the Misty Highlands

Hidden within the central plateau, Mare aux Vacoas is the largest reservoir in Mauritius and a quiet inland escape known for its forested surroundings, cooler climate, and calm waters.

Often passed along scenic road trips across the island, it offers a lesser-known, peaceful stop away from the usual tourist sites

About Mare aux Vacoas

Set at around 600 metres above sea level near Grand Bassin, Mare aux Vacoas is the largest reservoir in Mauritius, with an expanse of 2.6km. The reservoir stretches across the highlands, surrounded by dense greenery, winding roads and changing weather conditions that often give the area a misty atmosphere.

Despite popular belief, Mare aux Vacoas isn't a volcanic crater. Originally constructed in 1885, Mare aux Vacoas still supplies water to several regions across Mauritius today. Serving as a vital lifeline to communities such as Vacoas, Floreal, and Moka, with a combined population exceeding 500,000, it boasts an impressive capacity of 25.89 million m³.

More Than Just a Reservoir Stop

While many travellers pass through the area on the way to nearby attractions, the reservoir itself has become a popular stop for its scenery, fresh climate and peaceful setting away from the busier coastal regions.

Unlike hiking destinations or structured attractions, Mare aux Vacoas is more about slowing down during the drive and enjoying the changing landscapes of the Mauritian highlands. On some days, the reservoir appears calm and grey beneath low clouds, while during drier periods the water can reveal striking turquoise shades against surrounding rocks and greenery, creating beautiful photo opportunities along the roadside.

The area also attracts visitors looking for a more natural and less commercial side of Mauritius. Short walks, light jogging and quiet roadside stops are common here, especially for travellers exploring inland routes through Plaine Champagne, Grand Bassin or Black River Gorges National Park.

Because of its cooler temperatures and peaceful atmosphere, Mare aux Vacoas often feels completely different from the tropical beach scenery many travellers associate with Mauritius, making it a refreshing contrast within a full-day island itinerary.
