Guided Coffee Tour at Chamarel: From Plantation to Cup
If you’re already planning a stop in Chamarel, this Guided Coffee Tour offers a side of the region many travellers don’t expect.
Behind the Scenes at Chamarel Coffee Plantation
Instead of simply tasting coffee at the end of a visit, you’ll step behind the scenes of Mauritius’ only coffee plantation and discover what makes Chamarel coffee so special. Your experience starts with a guided walk through the plantation, where you’ll learn how Arabica coffee is grown 280 metres above sea level in Chamarel’s volcanic soil and unusual microclimate.
Along the way, you’ll see traditional harvesting methods, meet the local farmers, gain insight into fermentation, drying and roasting techniques, and discover the sustainable farming practices that shape production here.
The Coffee Tasting Experience
After seeing the process first-hand, the tasting session is the real treat. You’ll sample regional brews while discovering the subtle flavour notes that make Chamarel coffee unique, from hints of cocoa and vanilla to tropical fruit undertones shaped by the island’s climate and mineral-rich soil.
Before leaving, you’ll also have access to the boutique, where freshly roasted coffee and artisanal products make easy souvenirs - or thoughtful gifts to bring a taste of Mauritius back home.
About Chamarel Coffee Plantation
Set in the highlands of southwest Mauritius, Chamarel is known for its cooler temperatures, volcanic landscapes and rare growing conditions. It’s here that Mauritius’ only coffee plantation grows Arabica beans at an unusually low altitude, creating flavours shaped by mineral-rich soil, soft sunlight and steady humidity.
The Coffee Tour Experience forms part of the wider Chamarel destination, close to popular attractions such as the Seven Coloured Earth, Chamarel Waterfall, making it an easy and worthwhile addition to your day in the region.
