About the Full Day Tour in the North of Mauritius
Get ready to explore the most amazing sites in the north of the island. From the city of Port-Louis, where battles were fought in the past and where the first developments were done under French and British occupation to the SSR Botanical Garden where endemic plants can be spotted, this tour offers a full trip along memory lane brushed with some scenic nature views.
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (aka Mauritius National Botanical Garden)
The National Botanic Garden, formally known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, is one of the most visited attractions in Mauritius.
The garden is located in the proximity of Port-Louis in the district of Pamplemousses and is home to an incredible variety of tropical plants - many of them being indigenous. Visit this garden and take a stroll down history lane. You will be swept to an era where the French occupied the island and you will witness the development of Mauritius from that time to what it is now, through the stories that the trees narrate.
L'Aventure du Sucre - Sugar Museum and Factory
Mauritius wouldn’t be as we know it today if it wasn’t for its elixir: sugar. Rising above the sugar cane fields in the Northwest of Mauritius, the Sugar Museum and Factory (also known as the Beau Plan sugar mill or L'Aventure du Sucre) becomes the narrator of 250 years of Mauritian history.
During your visit, you'll hear local sugar tales and watch a variety of videos and short films about the chronicles of sugar. The tour culminates at the museum's boutique, where you can explore the aromas and flavours of different types of sugar, including golden granulated, muscovado, brown sugar, and more. Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in a rum tasting session at the hospitable bar towards the end of the museum shop.
Port Louis - The Capital of Mauritius
Enjoy a visit to Port Louis - the capital of Mauritius and the island’s largest city, economic, cultural, political and administrative hub.
Le Caudan Waterfront. The bustling Port Louis Waterfront offers exciting shopping and entertainment venues intermingled with world-class hotels and restaurants overlooking the Port Louis Harbor. The Le Caudan Waterfront shopping complex with over 150 shops, is a shopper's must-visit and the centre for local artists and Mauritian artefacts.
Port Louis Central Market. The craft market in particular is a hive of activity with a wonderful ambiance where you are sure to find a lot of souvenirs for the family back home. Then you will get a very different shopping experience when visiting Port Louis central market – the market is the ideal place to find many locally made products, textiles, Mauritian spices, fruits and many souvenirs for very cheap prices.
Right off the prime square, you can stroll beside the palm-lined boulevard of Place d'Armes. Spend some time admiring the wonderful French colonial buildings, and especially the Government House and the Municipal Theater. From there you can stroll down to visit the Natural History Museum and the center of Port Louis.
As part of the excursion to Port Louis, you'll have the opportunity to explore Fort Adelaide (also known as La Citadelle) built by the British in the 1830s. Perched 240 ft above sea level, this strategic location offers a picturesque panorama of Port Louis, its historic harbour and Signal Mountain.
On your break from shopping, you can tour the city and see some wonderful French colonial buildings, especially the Government House and the Municipal Theatre. Also, under the time limitation, you can visit the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, the main city Mosque, Chinatown, the Supreme Court house, the 18th century Barracks and many additional sights.
The Mauritius Postal Museum
Conceived in 1995, the Mauritius Postal Museum was housed in a former hospital building dating from the British occupation. The museum's move to the Central Post Office in Port-Louis (listed as a historic monument in 1958) has given a new dimension to its collection in a more spacious setting - and it’s a must-see!
During your visit, you'll discover fascinating exhibits & artefacts that trace Mauritius' postal evolution, from the Dutch tradition of message bottles to the pioneering postal initiatives under French and British rule. More to that, you'll learn about mail delivery auctions on Rodrigues Island and airmail milestones.
As part of this tour, you can opt to enjoy a delicious lunch and a unique dining experience at the beautiful Fangourin restaurant situated inside L’Aventure du Sucre sugar estate. With its perfectly preserved vegetation, its picturesque pond with lush greenery and geese, the restaurant offers a stress free environment conducive to relaxation. The Fangourin cuisine is inspired from unique flavors while maintaining a rich Mauritian culinary heritage. The restaurant quickly became renowned thanks to its unique setting and colorful and gourmet cuisine.
