About Sunset Hike at Le Pouce
Come and discover this amazing hiking experience at sunset, a feast for the eyes and a breath of fresh air to soothe the soul.
The sunset hike begins in Petit Verger, a small village in the Moka district filled with green scenes. You will meet the guides at Le Petit Verger, at the foot of the Pouce Mountain. Your guides are professional mountaineers who will inform you about the safety and hazards of the mountain and the route of the trail. You will be accompanied at all points of your hike by mountain experts.
Your hike begins with the sun just past its zenith, making the surrounding feel bright and full of life.
The first part of the hike consists of a trail through the mountain’s forest, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful meditative walk among the native plants and trees, allowing you to calm your senses in a serene environment. The hike continues to a section where you can enjoy beautiful views towards Port Louis and other peaks of the Moka Range. A short hike later, you will reach the shoulder of the mountain, at an elevation of 736 metres. This section is essentially a large, gently sloping grassy area, offering amazing views to the south and northeast of the island.
For the final part of your hike, the trail continues to the last part of the summit and requires some rock climbing. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with an incredible 360 degree panoramic view. By the time you reach this spot, the sun would have mellowed into a less blinding light, enveloping you in a satin-like warmth.
At this point, you are sure to have a unique and wonderful view of the sunset; the different fading colours of the sunset shades are sure to capture your mind. While you enjoy the view, the guides will give you more information about your surroundings. You will be able to witness the Mauritian sunset closer to the sky. Enjoy the view of Pieter Both and Port-Louis from a different angle. With the memerising ballet of colours unfolding in front of you, you will feel overwhelmed with peace. As the sun makes its way behind the horizon, it will take with it your worries leaving you feeling lighter and happier - a moment to cherish forever.
On the way back, you will experience a nature hike in the dark, by headlight and with professional climbers to guide you. Hiking during the day is one thing, hiking after sunset is a whole different experience. The hike will be more exciting as all your senses will be elevated as you make your way through the dark. The mountain comes to life at night when all the nocturnal small animals start rummaging around, but rest assured, your guide will make sure you feel safe during the hike back.
This activity is unique in its kind, bringing together adventure and amazing views.
About the Le Pouce Mountain
Le Pouce is the third highest peak on the island and one of the most iconic features of the landscape.
Peaking at 812m, it is located in the North West of the island between the Pieter Both and the Signal mountain. The hike offers magnificent views of the Port Louis area and the Moka Range. Le Pouce is frequently visited by Mauritians and tourists, including Charles Darwin who went there in 1836.
The peak is shaped like a thumb, hence the French name "Le Pouce". At the top, you have an exceptional 360 degree view of the surrounding area. There are two trails: from Port Louis on the north side and from Moka on the south side, ranging from 4.5 to 7 km depending on the starting point.
