Le Domaine de Saint Aubin Visit - What to Expect?
A visit to the Domaine de Saint Aubin is an immersive experience for nature lovers, history buffs and photography enthusiasts. It's an exceptional opportunity to discover Mauritius' rich heritage, from the tea industry to sugar and rum production.
On this tour, you'll be guided through the estate's historic sugar factory, and rum house for a tasting of traditional rum made from freshly pressed sugar cane juice. Aged in oak barrels, the estate's rum can be flavoured with vanilla or coffee for a taste of authentic island tradition.
One of the highlights of the tour is the vanilla greenhouse. Here you'll be introduced to the fascinating and meticulous process of transforming vanilla orchids into aromatic pods - which takes 8-9 months for the vanilla to develop its full flavour. Known as "l'or noir" (black gold), vanilla is a precious and labour-intensive product, and the estate proudly follows a no-waste policy, using every part of the vanilla pod. This includes the production of their unique "sel à la vanille", which you'll be able to sample during a salt tasting session with a variety of flavours.
You'll also have the chance to explore the botanical trail, the anthurium flowers and the tropical spice garden, which are perfect for taking photographs. For those who enjoy animal encounters, the mini farm on the estate allows you to interact with local fauna, including fawns, chicks and peacocks.
Before leaving, be sure to visit the on-site shop where you can purchase preserved vanilla, which can last up to 10 years, and other authentic Mauritian products to take home as souvenirs of this unique experience.
