About the Tour - Chamarel: The Ultimate Discovery Tour
This full-day experience is designed for travellers who want to discover the iconic region of Chamarel without rushing or overloading their schedule. From forests and waterfalls to colourful landscapes and local flavours, the day unfolds naturally - one highlight flowing into the next.
It’s the kind of tour that lets you see a lot, without feeling like you’re ticking boxes.
Ebony Forest
The day begins in the cooler highlands of Ebony Forest, a protected reserve known for its rare ecosystems and ongoing conservation efforts. A short visit to the museum and introductory film introduces Mauritius’ natural history and the restoration work helping native species recover.
Exploration of the reserve is organised primarily by 4x4 jeep along a concrete forest track winding through the Ridgeline area. The experience includes access to the Flycatcher Raised Walkway, offering a rare mid-canopy perspective through one of the island’s best-preserved ebony forests. Keep an eye on the skies and treetops - fruit bats, Mascarene swiftlets and white-tailed tropicbirds are often seen soaring above the ridgeline, while endemic species thrive beneath the canopy.
Chamarel Waterfall
The journey continues to one of the island’s most impressive natural sights. The Chamarel Waterfall plunges nearly 100 metres into a lush gorge, with three distinct streams carving through volcanic rock and dense forest.
This brief stop offers a striking contrast of scale and scenery - dramatic, refreshing, and ideal for photos.
Seven Coloured Earth
A short drive away, the landscape changes completely. The iconic Seven Coloured Earth reveals soft dunes of naturally coloured sand, shifting between reds, browns, violets, greens and yellows depending on the light.
The site is easy to explore at your own pace and is also home to giant tortoises. Your visit includes access to the café and souvenir shop if you wish to take a short break.
Rhumerie de Chamarel
By midday, the focus turns to local flavours. Set in a fertile valley surrounded by sugarcane fields and tropical fruit plantations, the Rhumerie de Chamarel blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
Your visit includes a guided discovery of the rum-making process, followed by a tasting session. Lunch is optional at L’Alchimiste, the estate’s à la carte restaurant - a relaxed pause in the heart of the south-west.
A playful finish at Curious Mauritius
The day ends on a lighter note at Curious Mauritius, an interactive space dedicated to optical illusions and playful perception challenges.
Relaxed, social and often full of laughter, it’s an easy and engaging way to round off the experience before returning to your accommodation in the early evening.
- The starting site for the day's itinerary depends on your place of accommodation, and the driver will brief you accordingly on the day of the trip.
- As this is a private trip, we can adjust the tour times to suit your preferences, within certain limits. Please note that the route is fixed, and pick-up and drop-off must be at the same hotel.
- While Ebony Forest is not fully accessible to wheelchair users, main viewpoints can be reached via the jeep route. The boutique, ecology centre, and toilet facilities are adapted for wheelchair access.
- The boardwalk at Seven Coloured Earths Geopark is accessible to all visitors. It is recommended to start from the right and follow the 360° path to the main viewpoint.
