Discover the Story of Sugar at L'Aventure du Sucre
This is not just a museum visit - it’s one of the few places in Mauritius where you truly understand how the island was built. Set inside the former Beau Plan sugar factory, closed in 1999 and saved from demolition, the site brings together nearly five centuries of history shaped by sugar.
From labour and migration to culture, economy, and even energy production today, sugar has influenced almost every part of Mauritian life. This visit gives you the full picture - in a setting where the story is still physically standing around you.
Inside the former Beau Plan factory
You begin inside the original factory itself - not a reconstruction, but the real structure. Massive machinery still fills the space: steam engines from the 19th century, a working-era locomotive from 1922, and four huge cane-crushing mills that once powered the industry.
Nearly three-quarters of the factory’s original equipment has been preserved, turning the space into what many call a “cathedral of sugar”, where scale alone gives you a sense of what this industry once represented.
Where Mauritius’ story takes shape
As you move through the 5000m² exhibition space, the focus expands. This is where the story becomes human. Workers from Africa, India, China and Europe - each group playing a role in shaping the Mauritius we know today.
It’s a powerful reminder that sugar is not just an industry here - it’s directly linked to the island’s multicultural identity, its people, and its evolution into a modern society.
From sugarcane to modern innovation
The journey then shifts to how sugar is produced and how the industry has evolved. Beyond traditional production, you’ll discover how sugarcane today contributes to green energy, bio-fertilisation, and advanced agro-technologies - making it still relevant in modern Mauritius.
This part is simple to follow, but surprisingly eye-opening, especially if you’ve only ever seen sugar as a final product.
The tasting experience everyone remembers
The visit naturally leads into a tasting session - but not just a quick sample. L’Aventure du Sucre is the only place on the island offering a full guided tasting of unrefined Mauritian sugars, known globally for their quality and flavour.
You’ll also discover local rum, including selections from one of the island’s oldest distilleries (dating back to 1838), along with artisanal products like vanilla, honey, and tropical fruit preserves.
- Fun fact: Mauritius is a global leader in gourmet unrefined sugars.
- A popular stop: The site welcomes over 100,000 visitors every year.
More than a museum experience
Beyond the museum, the experience continues outdoors and around the estate. The Village Boutik showcases over 300 locally made products, supporting Mauritian artisans, while the surrounding gardens and spaces host exhibitions, events, and cultural activities throughout the year.
Since its opening in 2002, the site has also taken a strong sustainable approach, from energy use to waste management, making the visit not just about the past - but also about the future of the island.
- Please note that the Museum, Boutique and Restaurant will be closed from 24 to 26 Dec & from 31 Dec to 02 Jan.
