1 Day Tour: Swim with Dolphins, Salt Pans, Chamarel & Casela Nature Parks
2.5 hours Swimming with Dolphins
Start your day with one of Mauritius’ biggest bucket-list experiences: swimming with dolphins in their natural habitat.
After a short briefing from the skipper, you will head out by speedboat for an unforgettable 2.5-hour experience, with the chance to observe — and, if conditions allow — swim alongside dolphins in crystal-clear waters.
Unlike enclosed dolphin experiences, this takes place in the open sea along Mauritius’ west coast, near Tamarin Bay and Le Morne. This area is home to two incredible species - the playful Spinner Dolphins and the larger Bottlenose Dolphins, who often travel in pods of around 20 or more to Le Morne peninsula.
Dolphins can regularly be spotted during the early morning - before going to the deep sea for their daily feeding. Seeing them swimming freely in the wild is honestly one of those experiences visitors talk about long after the holiday ends.
Tamarin Salt Pans
Along the way, you will also stop beside the Tamarin Salt Pans, the oldest salt pans in Mauritius, dating back to the French colonial era.
Owing to the exceptionally high level of sunshine in the area, Tamarin historically became the heart of salt production in Mauritius. Even today, traditional salt-making continues across around 30 hectares, using shallow basalt pans where seawater naturally evaporates under the sun.
Even today, around 30 hectares remain in use, and surprisingly, the salt-making process has barely changed in over 100 years. Seawater is still pumped into large shallow basalt rock pans and left to naturally evaporate under the sun. After a few days, the salt residue is harvested and stored before being sent for refining.
Between June and December, you may even spot giant salt piles waiting to be harvested or traditional “sauniers” (salt workers) carrying baskets of salt across the pans.
Visit the Casela Nature Parks
No trip to Mauritius feels quite complete without a visit to Casela Nature Parks - one of the island’s best-known attractions and an absolute must-do!
Located beside the Rempart Mountain in the South West of Mauritius, Casela combines wildlife encounters, family fun and outdoor adventure across several thematic worlds, making it much more than just a nature park.
Entrance ticket includes:
- A unique chance to see antelopes, kudus, impalas, oryx, waterbucks, white rhinos, zebras, ostriches & more from the African Safari Truck. A Casela favourite
- Access to the Pangia Park with unlimited family-friendly rides & activities for all ages. A Casela day is not just about animals!
- A chance to see some of Casela’s most iconic residents up close, including lions, tigers and caracals at the Predator Kingdom.
- Either 1 ride on Casela’s famous Tulawaka Gold Coaster (6+ years), a thrilling 760m summer luge track with twists, bends and scenic views, or access to the immersive 4D Cinema, subject to availability.
(All activities and attractions which are not included in this package are pay-as-you-go)
Chamarel Village – One of Mauritius’ Most Scenic Places
Another place that constantly pops up on Mauritius bucket lists is Chamarel Village - which is also included in this tour.
Hidden in the lush South West, Chamarel is home to two of Mauritius’ most famous natural wonders - the stunning Chamarel Waterfall and the surreal Seven Coloured Earth.
-
The Seven Coloured Earth
You have probably already seen photos of it online - and yes, it really does look that unusual in real life.
Surrounded by lush greenery, this fascinating geological phenomenon features naturally coloured dunes in shades of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow, creating an almost surreal, moon-like landscape. The geopark stretches across around 15 metres of beautifully coloured dunes and is also home to a few famously friendly giant tortoises, who usually steal a little attention from visitors too. There is also a coffee shop and souvenir shop onsite if you feel like taking a little break.
-
Chamarel Waterfall
While visiting Chamarel, you will also stop for views of the spectacular Chamarel Waterfall, often considered the most beautiful waterfall in Mauritius.
Fed by the St. Denis River, three streams plunge nearly 100 metres into a dramatic gorge, surrounded by lush forests and mountains. It is one of those places where people naturally stop, take a deep breath and reach for their camera.
