Setting

The quiet and laid-back Coin de Mire Attitude occupies a peaceful pocket of northern Mauritius, about 10 minutes outside of the hustle and bustle of Grand Baie. Coin de Mire Attitude is across the main coastal road from the pretty Bain Boeuf public beach, which offers clear views of the ship-sail-shaped Gunners Quoin island for which the resort is named.

The entrance gate is right off the main road and the driveway runs down the resort's center. Off of the open, thatch-roof lobby is a grassy lawn with tall coconut trees, small palms, and lounge seating on a wood platform. Here and elsewhere across the green gardens are lovely spots to watch the sun streaming through palm leaves in the late afternoon.

Things swing into action at night, when guests pour in for the evening buffet, poolside drinks, and after-dinner drumming. Low-rise, white-washed room buildings with thatched roofs line the backside of the property, cocooning the garden grounds and lending it a beachy Mauritian feel.

The small village of Cap Malheureux owes its name to all the shipwrecks that have taken place on its coasts. It is also known that the British, in 1810, landed to take definitive possession of the island. On Sundays, many faithful come to hear mass at Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux church. The songs and dances enliven this picturesque place and there are street vendors to buy fruit, local products and sarongs.

The symbol of Cap Malheureux is its church with a red roof in front of the bay. A true postcard landscape which makes it one of the most picturesque excursions.It offers a breathtaking view of the Coin de Mire, an islet a few kilometers north of the main island.
