Located in the southwest Indian Ocean, Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate that is greatly affected by southeast trade winds. The weather in Mauritius is warm and pleasant throughout the year and water temperatures in the Indian Ocean are also ideal for swimming.

Each of the periods have some advantages and disadvantages and this is why it is best to take into account all the different factors before making your decision on when to visit Mauritius.

The warmest weather occurs during the month of February while the coolest temperatures tend to hit during July. In general, the western and northern regions are warmer and drier than those in the east and south.

The Mauritian summer months, from October to April, are ideal for a Mauritius beach holiday.

When you visit during this season, the days are long, hot and humid, making swims in the ocean more refreshing and the breeze more welcome. Summer is usually the peak touristic season in Mauritius, so you can expect crowds, especially on the beach.

Towards the end of December through till March is the cyclone season, however it is worth noting that over the past few years, no major cyclones have hit Mauritius.

Best activities and things to do during summer in Mauritius

Those looking for a warm, tropical climate can spend most of the day on the beach or at the sea. This is a great time to visit the island’s beaches and enjoy a wide variety of water sports.

Diving enthusiasts will have the clearest waters between December and March, whereas Anglers will be delighted at the opportunities available for big game fishing through the months of October till April.

Visiting Mauritius during winter

During its winter months, July to September, the temperature is much cooler and on most days, you will not even have to use the air conditioner. It rains less in winter and when it does rain it's mainly in the evening or just a passing shower during the day.

As an added bonus, hotel prices are much lower during this off-peak season. Taxi drivers and shop vendors can also be bargained with, as they will be more flexible during this time of year, when the number of tourists are low.

All in all, during the Mauritian winter months, you get a much more relaxing holiday whilst also not worrying about cyclones.

Best activities and things to do during winter in Mauritius

The cooler weather during this period with less humidity makes this is the time to engage in many of the inland activities offered on the island such as hiking and quad biking.

Despite it being winter, a tan can still be achieved, as the sun shines throughout the day, especially during midday, when the sun is particularly strong. Surfers are advised to visit the beaches of Mauritius between June and August as during this period, you are sure to have amazing waves along the west coast of Mauritius, especially in the area of Tamarin and Le Morne.

During this season, there are also fewer crowds at historic and scenic attractions, due to the low tourist numbers- so a visit to these sites is recommended.
