The Village of Chamarel
Chamarel is a small village in the southwest of Mauritius, with a population of around 700 people. It was named after Charles Antoine de Chazal de Chamarel, a Frenchman who lived in the area in the early 1800s.
Today, Chamarel is known for its incredible natural sites. The Seven Coloured Earth, with its unusual rainbow-like sand dunes, is one of the most famous spots on the island. Not far from there, the Chamarel Waterfall offers one of the best viewpoints in Mauritius. You’re also just a short drive from the Black River Gorges National Park, a great place for hiking and spotting wildlife.
The area around the village is also known for its local coffee and the Chamarel Rhum Distillery, where visitors can learn how rum is made - and taste a few samples too.
