The Martello Tower - A Strategic Stronghold

Constructed by the British during the early 19th century, the Martello Tower was one of 5 forts built to safeguard the western coastline during the period surrounding the abolition of slavery. Its design was inspired by a fortress in Corsica, admired for its effective defensive capabilities.

Highlights of the tower include:

  • Walls up to 3.5 metres thick, built to withstand naval attacks
  • A clever ventilation system ensuring a cool, dry interior
  • An elevated entrance, once accessible only by retractable ladder
  • A rainwater collection system hidden in the basement
  • A roof equipped with pivot-mounted cannons for crossfire defense
  • An interior arch constructed with over 60,000 bricks

Insight into Military Life

Visitors can explore how British soldiers once lived, worked, and defended the island. The tower’s carefully preserved interior reveals the ingenuity of its builders and offers an authentic look at life during that era - complete with displays of weaponry and military tools.

A Careful Restoration

Restoration began in 1992, led by the Friends of the Environment association with support from the Mauritian government, foreign embassies, and local businesses. The original cannon was reinstated, and its platform fully rebuilt.

In 1993, volunteers from Raleigh International carried out archaeological work, uncovering over 800 artefacts now on display.

Today, the Martello Tower is a national heritage site, welcoming tourists and school groups for guided visits.
