A Guide to the Most Spectacular Waterfalls in Mauritius
Beyond its beaches and lagoons, Mauritius reveals a wilder side - lush forests, volcanic peaks, roaring waterfalls, and deep gorges.
Hidden in remote corners, the island’s waterfalls offer peace and raw beauty, often surrounded by dense greenery. The journey may be challenging, but the reward is unforgettable.
Walk softly, breathe deeply, and let wild Mauritius lead the way.
Chamarel Waterfalls
Chamarel Waterfall, named after Captain Antoine de Chamarel, is one of Mauritius’ most iconic natural sites.
Located in the southwest near the Seven Coloured Earths, it’s the island’s tallest waterfall at nearly 100 metres, fed by three streams from the Saint Denis River and flowing over 8-million-year-old volcanic rock.
View it from the upper deck or follow a short trail to the base for a refreshing dip.

Easily reached via Plaine Champagne, the site features a scenic viewpoint, parking, and local snack stalls. From the lookout, the waterfall appears as a soft white stream over rocky cliffs.
Visit during guava season for a taste of wild goyave de Chine along the trail.
Tamarind Falls
Tamarind Falls, or Sept Cascades, near the village of Henrietta in the Black River district, is one of Mauritius’ most scenic and adventurous sites.
Fed by the Tamarin River, it features seven waterfalls surrounded by lush forest and birdlife. It’s a paradise for hikers, canyoning fans, and anyone up for a swim in natural pools.
Some trails are best tackled with a local guide - walk behind the falls, feel the spray, or enjoy a natural massage under the cascade.

Rochester Falls
Rochester Falls, 2.5 km from Souillac in the Savanne district, is one of Mauritius’ most iconic and widest waterfalls
Set in a wild, green landscape, its 10-metre cascade plunges over jagged basalt cliffs into the Savanne River, creating frothy pools below - ideal for a swim or picnic.
A favourite among locals and visitors, the falls are also known for cliff diving, though best left to the pros.
